What is Shrinkies shrink art?

Cut out the rainbows, but leave about ¼" around the outer edge, and cut flat across the bottom. Cut out the circles, staying close to the outer edge. Leave plenty of room between the rainbow and the circle, as you will need excess plastic shrinky dink paper around the rainbow-Trace and color in the circle. Once you have traced and colored the rainbow, move the plastic over the circle template. Place the first sheet on top of your template, and begin tracing the rainbow with the different color permanent markers.

If you didn’t play with Shrinky Dinks as a kid, the craft involves drawing something on what seems like a piece of thick paper, cutting it out, and baking it in the oven. I printed a “contact” sheet too so I was able to do 16 smaller photos (perfect for earrings or a necklace pendant). Place the shrink paper on a baking sheet and follow the directions on the box to shrink your photo. Do not select any other type of photo paper. Where it says “Paper Type”, select Transparency Film. Once you’ve selected the photo you want to work with and you are ready to print, go into your printer properties. Turn your heat gun on and in even rotations, go around your shrink dink art – use the stick to keep it in place.

Take out of the oven and immediately place a book on top of the hearts (don’t remove the parchment paper). Your oven might be a bit different than mine so start with one of your hearts or a scrap piece of film to test. I even had to trick it by taping the shrink film to a regular sheet of paper to get it to move through the printer correctly. Once the pieces are totally flat (about 5-7 minuets), take them out to cool. Place the pieces face down on a cookie sheet that is covered in parchment paper or a layer of brown paper bag. Remove the tape and color the cell with colored pencils.

Once it has stopped moving and lies flat, let it bake for another 30 seconds. On a rare occasion, we have had our edges touch and stick together. Place your cut-out pieces colored side up on the sheet, spaced out to avoid sticking. Preheat your oven or toaster oven to 325°F (163°C), or follow the temperature on your specific plastic’s instructions. Rounded corners are preferable since sharp points can curl up too much or break after shrinking. Just remember to color boldly, as the colors will intensify but darken during baking.
